Laso, a key figure in contemporary Argentine tango, teams up with producer Aldo ‘Macha’ Asenjo of Chilean cumbia outfit Chico Trujillo, to explore a collection of deeply treasured songs. While many are revered classics from Latin America and Europe, Laso breathes new life into each, skillfully revealing the depth of melody and lyrical poignancy. Her profound and captivating voice is beautifully complemented by guest singers, including fellow Argentine Vicentico (of Fabulosos Cadillacs), Cuban urbanite La Dame Blanche and Asenjo himself. Their harmonious support, folding in melodies and sharing verses, intensifies the emotional resonance of every track. The vibrant energy Laso exudes permeates a collection that embodies her artistic restlessness, as she fearlessly explores diverse musical genres, from Chilean nueva canción (Violeta Parra’s ‘Ausencia’) to tackling formidable French classics, offering Spanish versions of Piaf’s ‘Non, Je ne Regrette Rien’ (‘No Me Arrepiento de Nada’) and Cabrel’s ‘Je L’aime à Mourir’ (‘La Quiero a Morir’). It is evident that these are songs that Laso holds a deep affection for, and she performs them with the utmost respect and delicacy, in the company of musicians she greatly admires. Needless to say: it works.
