Formed eight years ago, Bixiga 70 have made an indelible mark on the contemporary market for Afro-Brazilian music; its not all samba and jazz! Hailing from the neighbourhood of Bixiga in the centre of São Paulo, the group have quickly become a paragon of the contemporary Afrobeat and dance music scene in Brazil. The ten-piece always provide a spectacular live show, and this video captures some of their flair, energy and flawless bassy grooves.
With three critically acclaimed albums under their collective belt, this preview of their hotly awaited fourth album is a great watch. ‘Quebra Cabeça’ (meaning 'Puzzle' in Portuguese) seems to be a worthy title-track. The single combines whirling synths, heavy brass arrangements, thumping bass, drum kit fills and yummy guitar riffs. What more could you ask for? Not much.
Quebra Cabeça will be out on all platforms from October 19.
You can catch Bixiga 70 live at London’s Jazz Café on October 23, tickets are available here.
