Those indefatigable folk evangelists Broadside Hacks present their second tribute to illustrious and highly-influential traditional music venue Les Cousins this coming bank holiday.
Located slap-bang at the heart of the British folk revival during the mid-60s, the Soho rendezvous, which hosted such influential artists as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, John Martyn, Paul Simon and the Incredible String Band, also provided a pivotal forum for cultural exchange, dialogue and collaboration.
In reverence to the place, its abiding influence and memory, Broadside Hacks Folk Club curates three evenings of musical delights between August 24-26 at Flitcroft Gallery, WC2H 8DJ (opposite St Giles in the Fields), with certified legends Bridget St John and John Altman (Nick Drake/John Martyn) lining up alongside some of the latest antecedents of the UK’s fecund folk lineage in the form of Daisy Rickman, Goblin Band, Angeline Morrison and Sam Grassie.
Accompanying the live performances will be a weeklong art exhibition, exploring and illustrating the infamous history of the Greek Street hangout, as well as a talk on the role of women in folk entitled ‘Let No Man Steal Your Thyme’, featuring Incredible String Band’s Rose Simpson and Diana Matheou, wife of Andy who founded Les Cousins back in 1964.
