Here’s a bit of a sneak peek for our July issue (#149, on sale June 14): the BAFTA- and Olivier Award-winning actor Toby Jones will be talking us through his playlist of just some of his favourite music from all around the world.
His new series, the tragi-comic drama Don’t Forget the Driver, tells the story of Peter Green (played by Jones), a coach driver in the sleepy town of Bognor Regis, as he wrestles with the emotions of mundane daily life soon to be shaken up with an unexpected arrival. The series as a whole is poignant and bittersweet, but with a warm humour throughout.
With Jones as co-creator and writer alongside playwright Tim Crouch, music is, of course, an important element of the show, and Songlines readers will be delighted to hear pieces from artists such as baroque folkies Pentangle and Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke in the soundtrack. Music from the cross-continental string duo Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita also features throughout, serving as an important through-line for the whole series.
The series is currently being broadcast on BBC Two on Tuesdays at 10pm, and the whole series can be watched on BBC iPlayer until Thursday 13 June.
