Cumbia Legends Manzanita y Su Conjunto Embark on Their First UK Tour
By Izzy Felton
The legendary group who paved the way for Peruvian cumbia in the 1960s have set off on their month long tour of the UK this week
Berardo 'Manzanita' Hernández Jr.
This summer, the vibrant sounds of tropical Peruvian guitar take over the UK as Cumbia legends Manzanita y Su Conjunto embark on their first UK tour.
Hailing from a small town north of Lima, Peru, the late Berardo ‘Manzanita’ Hernández Sr. paved the way for Peruvian cumbia music in the 1960s and 70s with his masterful electric guitar skills. His unique blend of cumbia and guaracha rhythms, infused with psychedelia that swept Latin America in the 60s, revolutionised the music scene in Peru and left an indelible mark on Latin American music as a whole.
Manzanita y Su Conjunto first rose to prominence in the 60s and released their debut album El Nuevo Sonido de Manzanita in 1973. After Manzanita Sr.'s passing in 2007, his son Berardo Hernández Jr. – known as Manzanita Jr. – took up the mantle, continuing his father's legacy at the helm of the group comprised of top Latin musicians.
The month-long tour, titled "La Leyenda Continúa" (The Legend Continues), kicks off this week, promising to deliver the same energetic and dance-inducing music that cemented Manzanita's legendary status. The tour will take the band to cities across the UK.
As The Times puts it, the band's music possesses an “unabashed intention to lure audiences onto the dance floor.” Don't miss the chance to experience the magic of Manzanita y Su Conjunto live – it's an event that promises to be unforgettable.
