Mongolian-born, Munich-based singer Enji today releases the title-track from her new album, Ulaan, which comes out via Squama Recordings on July 28. This full-length follow-up to Ursgaul, her 2021 debut, brims with personal stories charged with universal meaning, predominantly sung in her mother tongue. It also sees Enji widen her musical vision, recruiting drummer Mariá Portugal and clarinettist Joana Queiroz into the fold, the pair’s nuanced contributions boosting Ulaan’s broody blend of wraithlike jazz and traditional Mongolian song.
For a pre-taste of Ulaan, check out Enji’s exclusive session for COLORS in Berlin, the singer decked out as a resplendent bell of decorative meringue as she performs an enchanting acoustic rendition of ‘Uzegdel’, a cut lifted from the new album.
Enji’s Ulaan will be reviewed in the September 2023 issue (#191) of Songlines magazine. Never miss an issue – subscribe today
