Landless, the Irish singing group made up of Ruth Clinton, Méabh Meir, Sinéad Lynch and Lily Power, are teasing out the release of their forthcoming album, Lúireach, delightfully. Today they launch a video (their second of the album so far) for 'Death and the Lady'.
Telling the story of a woman attempting to bargain with Death, the track features the eerie four-part harmony of the group, with Meir's warm, heavy vocals to the fore. Clinton's pipe organ, sometimes a drone beneath the voices, sometimes unpacking a slow melody around them, proves wonderfully unsettling. Meir stars in the playful and confronting black and white video directed by Clinton (who designed the album's sepia, botanical cover, too). Starkly pale, she appears as the lady in some scenes and, with a grey beard painted onto half her face, as Death in others. With a piercing look to camera, she narrates the story of the lady's resistance to her inevitable end.
Lúireach, meaning 'breastplate' or 'prayer for protection', is a collection of ten traditional and original songs focussed on women's experiences and perspectives. It will be released on June 7 through Glitterbeat Records.
