Commemorating the 250th anniversary of the writing of ‘Amazing Grace’ and the 300th birthday of its Anglican cleric author, John Newton, is Grace Will Lead Me Home, the forthcoming collaborative full-length featuring Angeline Morrison, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne and Jon Bickley.
Released via Bickley’s Invisible Folk imprint on May 17, the album features renderings of ‘Amazing Grace’ in its alternate ‘New Britain’ and ‘Jesu Thy Word Is My Delight’ iterations, as well as original tunes by all three musicians, who take their inspiration from extensive research and interviews conducted into the history and impact of the Christian hymn, its connections to the transatlantic slave trade, and deeper investigations into Newton’s life – tracing his evolution from slave trader to abolitionist – and his revealing relationships with both his wife and poet-friend William Cowper.
