Sawhney Premiere Launches London Early Music Fest
East meets West as innovative British-Asian sound alchemist kick-starts London International Festival of Early Music with world premiere
The London International Festival of Early Music begins on November 9 with the world premiere of Nitin Sawhney’s ‘Early Transitions’, a work specially commissioned for the opening night concert by The Brook Street Band at St Michael & All Angels, Blackheath.
Discussing the collaboration, Nitin Sawhney commented: “I’m very excited and honoured to be composing for the wonderful Brook Street Band, exploring connections between Eastern and Western classical ideas with particular reference to my love of Baroque music, Indian classical raga and mathematical interactions through the taal system, phrasing and diatonic expansion.”
Other artists at this year's event, which runs from November 9-12, include Solomon’s Knot, PIVA and Spain’s Taracea, while extra-curricular attractions come in the guise of workshops, competitions, festival evensong and a huge exhibition of leading instrument makers from across the globe.
