Kings Place have unveiled the latest iteration of their award-winning Unwrapped series, announcing the first tranche of artists for a 12-month hootenanny boasting some of the finest names from Scotland’s music and spoken-word scenes.
With shows beginning in January 2024, Scotland Unwrapped showcases the country’s rich traditional and regional offerings, while exploring its contemporary diversity with the gamut of composers, musicians and writers which sustain its distinctive voice in the world.
Multi-award winning folk-singer and yarn-spinner Karine Polwart has been appointed as the event’s Artist-in-Residence, and she curates two weekenders over the course of the year focused on ideas pertaining to “hospitality and sanctuary, darkness and light,” while other festival highlights include performances from Aidan O’Rourke, Bríghde Chaimbeul, Kris Drever and Julie Fowlis, as well as a special collaboration that sees the innovative Scottish Ensemble join forces with boundary-breaking sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun for a selection of specially-composed pieces and music from his full-length release, Anomaly (a live action recital of that album, recorded this May at the Howard Assembly Room in Leeds, is available to stream via Opera North until October 24).
