Shining a spotlight on contemporary and classical music from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, South Asian Sounds brings together some of the biggest names from the region, including Nishat Khan, Pratibha Singh Baghel and Kaushiki Chakraborty, for a new series being hosted at London’s Southbank Centre between March 7-10.
Also featuring cutting-edge cultural pollinators and post-idiomatic innovators such as Sarathy Korwar, Jason Singh and the Dialled In collective, South Asian Sounds works the nexus connecting club nights and concert halls, cultures and idioms, exploring intersections where bhangra meets jazz and qawwali collides with beat culture.
Those craving a taste of the programme’s myriad delights should cup an ear to the Southbank Centre’s bespoke South Asian Sounds playlist, a zonal buffet boasting everything from the Indian folk music of Malini Awasthi to the beguiling fusions of British-Bengali outfit, Khiyo.
