Tian Qiyi release ‘Red Mist’ single
Brothers John and Charlie Tian Yi Wardle preview album collaboration with father and bass supremo Jah Wobble
British-born duo Tian Qiyi provide a fiery foretaste of their forthcoming full-length, Red Mist, with the release of the title-track from it, an eclectic weave of traditional Chinese instrumentation, trip-hop grooves and psych-soused post-punk.
Set to drop via Pagoda Arts on September 29, the album sees brothers-in-arms John and Charlie Tian Yi Wardle enlist the slinky low-end of their illustrious bass-playing father, Jah Wobble, and his distinctive pulse can be heard throbbing throughout ‘Red Mist’, buoying Tian Qiyi’s deeply atmospheric soundscape with nods to his previous adventures in PiL.
Speaking about the new single, Charlie says: “Lyrically, it was inspired by films like Apocalypse Now and Come and See. The atmosphere of the music gave me the same emotion as those films did, so it felt organic.”
John adds: “Out of all the tracks from the album, I think this one [‘Red Mist’] shows a bit of everything we grew up listening to, bits of traditional Chinese music [the influence of their illustrious mother – Chinese guzheng player Liao Zilan], hip-hop, rock and jazz.”
Tian Qiyi’s Red Mist will be reviewed in the November issue of Songlines. Never miss an issue – subscribe today
