Emmanuel ‘Jagari’ Chanda in WITCH: We Intend To Cause Havoc (Bulldog Film Distribution)
WITCH: We Intend To Cause Havoc is the captivating documentary from director Gio Arlotta about the titular cult psych-garage stars of the Zamrock movement, a genre which burned brightly, but briefly, in Zambia during the mid-1970s.
The film, which was reviewed in the July 2021 issue of Songlines, follows a pair of European musicians who travel to meet with the band's enigmatic frontman, Emmanuel 'Jagari' Chanda, the last surviving member of the original line-up, to persuade him to resurrect the group 40 years after the release of WITCH's debut record. Along the way, we learn more about Chanda's personal story – his arrest, prison sentence and religious conversion – and how he hopes that the rediscovery of Zamrock can benefit his community.
