The music of Nigeria – Guides, Interviews and Features | Songlines

Nigeria Profile

More than 20 years after Fela Kuti’s death in 1997, his presence continues to loom over Nigerian music like a colossus.

The sound of his ‘Afrobeat’ is arguably more influential today than ever, kept simmering not only by his former band leader Tony Allen and his sons Femi and Seun Kuti but by countless bands around the world playing their own local variation of Afrobeat.

With over 140 million people and 250 distinct languages, Nigerian music also offers a vast panoply of other styles from highlife, shared with neighbouring Ghana, to the juju sounds of King Sunny Ade and the fuji music associated with the Yoruba people.
