Foreman is the founder of the Glasgow Old Time Session who has taken her old-time fiddle music around the world, while clawhammer banjo player Ruth Eliza is a member of all-female bluegrass quintet Blue Lass. A Little Wilderness is this new duo’s eagerly awaited debut. They’re possessed of great rhythmic, melodic playing, having enjoyed many late night jams at festivals – their powerful, driving fiddle and banjo tunes and songs draw heartily from that rich stock of hours. And you can’t go wrong with a tune like ‘Tina’s Requiem’, written after a bottle or few of wine after hearing news of Tina Turner’s passing. Jamming on this riff, they bring Little Wilderness to a close. Trad tunes like ‘Sally in the Garden’ mix with Eliza’s mournful title song, while Foreman’s tune ‘Shanghai Skyline’ was written while on tour in China and keenly missing a Glasgow Old Time session, some 9,000km away. You feel it in the fiddle’s bones.
