The order of a modern wedding has become standardised across the world: an engagement followed by a wedding ceremony with a banquet afterward. Which makes it easy forget that each country used to have its own wedding rituals and traditions. A Ukrainian Wedding is a collection of songs that allows you to learn more about the Ukrainian vesillia (wedding). Nadia Tarnawsky has carefully compiled a collection of folk songs from various regions of the country, which accompany each part of the wedding. Initially, Tarnawsky considered describing a wedding in a single village. However, witnessing nuptials wherein the bride and the groom from different regions of Ukraine decided to play music of their homelands, inspired her to show the full diversity of tradition in the country. With comprehensive liner notes, A Ukrainian Wedding can be divided into six parts: the proposal, the wedding invitations, the baking of the korovai (a festive bread), the morning before the wedding and the ceremony itself. Everything is brilliantly and captivatingly performed by the vocal ensemble Capella Romana. A Ukrainian Wedding is a great opportunity to learn more about Ukrainian culture — not just about folk music, but how Ukrainian society celebrates all parts of life.
