Another offering from Strut Records' Indian Ocean compilation series, this album of Malagasy songs takes a look at one of the most significant decades of musical productivity from a country whose place in the international music market has often been overlooked. Located 400km off the coast of East Africa, there is a lot about this island nation that is unique and the music is no exception. For the uninitiated this compilation is a good jumping-off point, showcasing the abundance of styles and variety to be found, with stellar tracks such as ‘Mahonena’ exemplifying the distinctive Malagasy sound.

Those more familiar with music from this region will appreciate the insight the collection gives to both the influences and musical directions of the era, holding a magnifying glass to the variations that gave birth to many of Madagascar's most iconic and vibrant styles today. ‘Izahay Mpamita’ by Mahaleo is one such piece; here the characteristically frantic rhythms give way to a more subdued, acoustic vibe, and the influence of American folk and protest song is audible, marking the beginnings of what would become the tsentsigat style. Overall, it is a revealing collection of music that certainly does the island justice.
