These present a polished selection of Tibetan songs from an experienced singer, who also plays all the accompanying instruments. Namgyal Lhamo has family roots in the pre-Chinese musical culture of the city of Lhasa – the nangma, toeshey and trukshey songs that are often termed ‘classical.’ She was also trained in the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, set up in India after the flight of the Dalai Lama in 1959. TIPA's real strength lies in this repertory, as well as in Tibetan opera and group dance songs from central and western Tibet. Lhamo's renditions of these classical songs are highly accomplished and elegant. Her style is highly individual, with subtle variations on the melodies of these famous and graceful songs.
The CD of folk songs includes many dance songs from central and western Tibet, and her immersion in these styles is audible in the way her singing and playing is intertwined with dance rhythms and movements. She also sings songs and dance songs from Kham and Amdo in eastern Tibet with polish. But it is clear that her musical grounding comes from Lhasa; in Kham or Amdo the unaccompanied songs would have a far more forceful delivery and distinctive ornamentation.
