When cult British guitarist Michael Chapman passed away in 2021, his final demos were entrusted to Australian banjoist Andrew Tuttle. Another Tide, Another Fish, their multi-dimensional collaboration, bridges hemispheres as well as the here and hereafter. Tuttle has placed Chapman’s music into a particle accelerator of ambient experimentation. The original riffs are splintered into their component parts and bounce back to us in revelatory ways. ‘A Third Revision (Or Evolution)’ sounds like a transmission of Chapman’s work repurposed as a minimalist-inspired language system. Chapman’s demos are included unmediated on Another Fish, the album’s second side. Their rough-hewn nature melds with Chapman’s distinctive fingerstyle playing to create an antique appeal. Comparing the originals and reinventions adds another dimension to the work, which is firmly in the spirit of Chapman’s experimental legacy.
