Ranging in stylistic deportment between sweetly braised acoustic rock (‘Any Light’, ‘No Mast’), analgesic stoner rock (‘Uncanny Valley’), folky dream pop (‘Medicine’, ‘Blue’) and waltzing psychedelia (‘On My Way to You’), Any Light is a ten-song easy listening trip guided by British Columbia-based multi-instrumentalists/songwriters Jesse Henderson and David Parry, collectively known as Loving. Like Loving’s eponymously titled 2016 debut EP and full-length 2020 release, If I Am Only My Thoughts, Any Light radiates an abundance of diaphanous romanticism and poetic melancholia. As produced by Henderson and Parry and mixed, mastered and engineered by the latter, the new album expands the band’s palette by virtue of lusher arrangements featuring trumpet, timpani, vibraphone, strings and organ. Henderson and Parry handle most of the instrumentation, augmented by Evan Cheadle (guitar), Colin Nealis (strings) and Keenan Mittag-Degala (percussion).
