Sarine is Mariano Melo, a Brazilian multi-instrumentalist based in São Paulo. Melo is known for his drumming with DEAFKIDS, purveyors of echo-laden experimental metal, and his collaborations with Rakta, Teto Preto and Cavalo Serpente, all of whom push boundaries with Brazilian music. These tracks were built from organ themes, developed with Felipe Pato, and inspired by the North Indian ragas of artists like Charanjit Singh and African organists such as Hailu Mergia, though I can also hear touches of faux-mystic Korla Pandit. The drone of an electric organ dominates ‘Asas Terrenas (Exordium)’, with a mixture of tablas and acoustic guitar which sets the tone. Everything is put through mangled effects on ‘Amuse-Hanches (Gangorra)’, and on the 11-minute improvisation of ‘Mato (A Call Beyond)’, the deft use of percussion weaves through the combination of the old and the new as the elements build to a crescendo, emulating a euphoric experience.
