Berlin-based Australian singer-songwriter Kat Frankie leads an eight-member all-female a cappella vocal ensemble on this, the group’s debut self-titled album. That Frankie cites such innovative musicians as PJ Harvey and Fiona Apple as inspirations should tell you much about the music that you’ll find here. In fact, all the performers in B O D I E S are talented artists in their own right, as evidenced by the sublime beauty of opening track ‘Wonder’ – a piece so exceptionally crafted and performed that it’s easy to forget that you are hearing the human voice alone. Built from a gorgeous bedrock of cyclical chants beneath a sumptuous melody, ‘All of It’ spirals further into a blossoming garden of sound. ‘Joan Didion’ delights with floating clouds of pastel-coloured notes. ‘Carmen’ skips lightly and quirkily, gently insinuating itself into your soul. A sensual and transformative listening experience.
