Betwixt & Between 11

Betwixt & Between Tapes is a quirky, niche proposition: an occasional series of cassette tape EPs featuring traditional, improvised and ambient music. Each release (also available as a digital download) showcases 15 minutes of each of the featured artists, thus Betwixt & Between 11 has London-based folk singers Bridget & Kitty on side one and Sheffield-based improvising duo Resonant Bodies on side two. Bridget & Kitty have fine, clear and complementary voices and perform, unaccompanied, four traditional songs including ‘Six Jolly Soldiers’ and ‘The Cruel Mother’. Resonant Bodies’ contribution is one 15-minute improvisation called ‘Cowering Fossil/Deluge of Memories’ played on nyckelharpa and hammered dulcimer. The effect is meditative, reminiscent of Benedicte Maurseth’s Hardanger fiddle improvisations, starting gently and growing ever more frenetic. An intriguing taster.
