Hitting heavy from the outset, BUTU is rampant with punk energy and mind melting psychedelic polyphony – an appropriate successor to KOKOKO!’s Fongola (2019). Most of the album is rooted in dense, hot and close feeling tracks such as ‘Nasala Nini’, that combine fiery distortion with the impassioned motivational chants of Makara Bianko. The instrumentation is sparse, leaving space for whichever sounds are present to be red-lined to the point of breaking and to take prominence. Deep, fast and syncopated; with piercing percussion on DIY equipment, throttling basslines melding with rippling melodies and effective, yet not overbearing, use of the synthesized and technical prowess of producer Débruit, it’s a record that will send audiences wild with off-kilter rhythms and a powerful pulse.
