The award-winning label Frémeaux is synonymous with informative historical boxed sets. Paris Gadjo Club's album is a contemporary release but with a suitably retro theme. Guitarist Christophe Davot and his three confrères effect a charming, convincing marriage of Gypsy jazz and Brazilian choro, a rather more discreet syncopated precursor of samba.
The twin acoustic guitars, double bass and clarinet of the quartet take on 13 melodies by such celebrated choro composers as Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim and Ernesto Nazareth. They do it with such empathy, brio and infectious swing that it transports you straight to the Hot Club of Paris. The warmth of Pierre-Louis Cas’ clarinet gives the music its Brazilian edge but, apart from the sudden appearance of a banjo and an alto sax in ‘Vésper’, it's difficult to single out highlights among the individual tracks. Each effortless number slides seamlessly into another. It's Django in the land of the choro – and it works a treat. Order yourself a café allongé, light up a Slim Panatella and watch the world drift by.
