The much-loved Marimba-Punk boys from Mexico City are back. This time with an album showcasing their own compositions; a departure from their debut, Batuco, which was a collection of cumbia covers. Chimborazo opens the heavily anticipated doors to allow us a glimpse of what this multifaceted band, formed by the Gama brothers, is all about.

Recorded in Bogotá with Frente Cumbiero's Mario Galeano on production duties, Chimborazo is not short of Colombian influences: from the accordion-fuelled ‘Toño y el Demonio’ with up-and-coming Colombian cumbia upstart Felipe Orjuela, to ‘Batuco Son’ which features the full compliment of Frente Cumbiero, to ‘El Tamal’ with all-female vocal-and-percussion trio La Perla, a song that takes you on a marimba-accompanied, psychedelic trip to Cartagena itself.

The heavy punk drive that Son Rompe Pera's live shows are famous for can be found on tracks such as ‘Chucha’, alongside the The Clash-style influence found on ‘Chico Migraña,’ which features Bogotá's premier rapper N Hardem. From Mexican marimba music to punk to hip-hop and to, of course, cumbia, this album delicately dabbles in just the right amount of traditional and modern to have everyone pleading for more.
