Lebeis comes from a background in theatre production but uses this assured debut to show her abilities in sound, texture and poetry. It’s an electro-shock of programmed drum machines, new wave synths and strange bleeps and whirrs, produced by Jonas Sá and Thiago Nassif. The title-track starts as an atmospheric spoken piece with guitar squall in the background, played most likely by Nassif. The way the beat moves onto the dancefloor reminds me of the work of the much-missed nightlife chroniclers Noporn. The album bursts with interesting textures, the distorted drone on ‘Fratura Exposta na Boca do Estômago’, for example, with contributions from Bellacomsom, the Rio sound artist and inventor of experimental instruments, whose work is often based in academia, so it’s fascinating to hear her in a more pop context. Of course, being carioca, there’s the batidão of Brazilian funk in ‘Meucorponuseucorponumeu’, albeit the more traditional boom bap variety rather than the new genres that are doing the rounds.
