Cladaich Loch Iù marks the debut of Gaelic singer and West Coast native Steven MacÌomhair and a pleasant enough, if unadventurous, release it is too. Consisting of mainly traditional tunes Cladaich Loch Iù is a well-mannered introduction to Gaelic song and traditions, with some anticipated renditions of old favourites.
‘O Theab Theab’, one of the highlights, is a swift toe-tapper, with some fine whistle work from Ali M Levack, while ‘Ho-ri Ho-ro na Bioreannaich’ is a melodious love song. MacÌomhair's ‘Puirt à Beul’ lacks something of the passion of other versions, but is precise and accomplished in its own way and ‘Thoir Dhomh do Làmh’ presents some fine chorus work. Overall though, the album is agreeable if a little forgettable.
MacÌomhair's idiosyncratic vocals can take a little while to get used to, but there is some lovely musicianship here and there is no denying the sincerity on show, it is a shame MacÌomhair wasn't just a little braver in his song selection and arrangements. Perhaps a little twee for most tastes, but an amiable release it is none the less.
