What comes to mind when someone mentions Colombia? Most probably cumbia, perhaps vallenato, a blast of champeta. If you've ever wondered what Colombians do for downbeat, here come some answers. Compiled by Croatian-born, Bogotá-based DJ and producer Dean Bagar (aka Tricky D), Colombian Soul taps a contemporary scene grounded on slow tempos, panpipey synths, dub treatments, minor keys and the sultry sort of female vocals we usually associate with Brazilian bossa and MPB. Alongside the likes of Latin Grammy-nominated Jimena Ángel, young Afro-Pacific ambassador Esteban Copete and drum'n'bass combo Radio Rebelde Soundsystem, Bagar slips in his own edgy electronica English-language track, ‘Time’, as well as ‘De Donde Vengo Yo’, which he recorded with local band Los Transatlanticos a few years back.

Contemporary Colombia is a largely urbanised nation, with thriving clubbing and bar scenes in the larger metropolises and arguably a more natural connection with Mexico and the US than, say, Chile and Argentina. While this taster won't appeal greatly to those who like their roots music raw and unrefined, it's a timely aural peek at what's happening as Colombia redefines itself after half a century of warring and woe. Soul music? Not really, but full of shadow as well as light, which gives it integrity. Available on vinyl as well as CD.
