With his first solo album in six years, the US-based Italian guitarist and composer puts his warm, ear-enveloping signature tone to the fore again with ten original pieces for the instrument. D'Agostino blends flamenco, classical, pop and rock influences to create his own unique style while this album also turns up moments of doo-wop and the avant-garde. Sitting well alongside other solo guitarists such as Tommy Emmanuel, D’Agostino turns the steel-string guitar into a miniature band, playing percussion, melody, chords and bass simultaneously.
While many similar solo guitarists feel the need for speed, technique and showiness, D'Agostino has the confidence to go for simplicity and to allow his pieces to sit back, giving them room to breathe and a spaciousness that allows the delicacy and tone of his playing to be appreciated. Open tunings give the pieces a pleasing resonance, yet he also finds harmonic progression and an array of hummable melodies, exemplified on ‘Mexican Sunrises’ where the melody sings sweetly over a gently swaying bass line.
