Culla e Tempesta (Cradle and Storm) is a spectacular new album by the female vocal quartet from Apulia. Formed in 1995 and named after one of the deepest karst caves of the region, Faraualla are joined on different tracks by percussionists Pippo D’Ambrosio and Michele Marrulli, the Ars Ludi Percussion Ensemble, Sonia Bergamasco and Pietro Esposito. The primordial sounds of voice and percussion are constantly renewed through in-depth research on polyphony, polyrhythm and different singing traditions: from cries and breaths to Gregorian and reggaeton, Faraualla create an original soundworld through a kaleidoscope of voices and body sounds restructuring liberation anthem ‘Bella Ciao’, as well as pieces by Tom Waits, Alan Menken and Daddy Yankee. Emotionally powerful and resonant with issues of today (violence, migration and climate), the music is both engaged and exhilarating.
