In 2020, Polish label 1000Hz launched Digital Indigenous, a series showcasing producers who use rudimentary digital tools to create unique electronic music. This atypical adventure led them to Malawi, a small country in southern Africa which is full of treasures and musical traditions. Crossing it from north to south, they dug up Andy One, DJ Kainga and Happy Mphanda, sonic craftsmen who translate the rhythms of the Lomwe and Ngoni people into a new language, finding the perfect balance between tradition and modernity. DJ Kapwanthi is in charge of the latest volume and is no exception to the rule with his frenetic and joyful music. Known for sampling dialogues from African films or conversations in his own studio, Raphael Tim gives his personal version of the Lomwe beat, a genre appreciated in popular places like local bars or markets. Spontaneously created on the essential FL Studio software, his catchy beats and happy melodies are inspired by local songs and traditional instruments such as the sansi, a cousin of the mbira. Kapwanthi's music also conveys universal messages, encouraging his fellow compatriots to accelerate their emancipation, in a festive way. A colourful series that never disappoints!
