Scientist is one of the iconic producers of Jamaican dub music. In his late teens, he found himself deep in the crucible of the 70s revolutionary dub meltdown that was being forged in the studios of Kingston. Hired to repair electronics at King Tubby's Studios, he was soon recording and mixing dub sessions and in demand across the city's happening studios (Studio One, Tuff Gong etc.), recording stars like Sugar Minott and Barrington Levy and earning himself the name ‘Scientist’ for his experimentalism, visionary techniques, sheer musicality and sonic knowhow. Last winter, Dutch record company Night Dreamer invited him to cut a record direct-to-disc and the result is an album of finely crafted baroque dub, every single track bristling with sonic wow factors. He's assembled a stunning band from across the London reggae and jazz scenes, including Mafia (bass) and Fluxy (drums) from The Instigators, Finn Peters (sax) and Salvoandrea Lucifora (trombone) and vocalists Donovan Kingjay, Alyssa Harrigan and Peace Oluwatobi. Each instrument has its own delay, and Scientist constructs soundscapes filled with ensemble climaxes decaying into solo lines and chattering percussive guitar… and you're swept away by the magic he creates.
