Hailing from Germany, this amorphous cross-cultural jazz collective have been making waves on the Berlin underground with their infectious grooves, forward-looking experimentation and entrancing live performances. Drawing on the diasporic traditions of its members, the band serves up a dizzying brew of sounds on this debut album. Lead single ‘Twasa’ is a vibrant interpretation of a South African Xhosa folk tale backed by a funky groove, electronic touches and synchronised Afrobeat horns. Elsewhere, instrumentation from multiple traditions, including the West African ngoni and the Moroccan gimbri meets jazz fundamentals, modern production and the poetry and singing of lead vocalist Dumama. A myriad of influences are cleverly fused into a whole that is much more than the sum of its parts. Multi-diasporic, dance-inducing and thoroughly itself. This is a must-listen for fans of Afro-jazz and forward-looking fusion.
