It's an ephemeral and tentatively psychedelic sound that Power delivers on the rather wonderful Dream from the Deep Well. The Irish singer-songwriter serves a sublime listen; an effortless blend of folk and pop which confidently also references current issues.
There is a chilled-out 70s vibe on ‘Counting Down’, which lingers with soft ambiance, while ‘The Waterford Song’ offers up an equally wistful meditation.
There is a splendid curation of traditional tracks here. ‘I Know Who is Sick’, made famous by The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, is delivered with a soft, yet potent, power in Power's capable hands. ‘Down by the Glenside’, a favourite of The Dubliners, is served with an equally haunting timelessness which proves palpably irresistible. It makes for a poignant end to a beguiling listen. A cover of Tim Buckley's ‘I Must Have Been Blind’ features too, with Power confidently playing with the laid-back California sound and layering it with some delicate harmonies, making the song her own.
Dream from the Deep Well has a mystical, ethereal air but Power uses this to cannily play with contemporary concerns. It's a clever, dreamy and seductive listen.
