The Russian-born, London-based DJ Vadim returns with another high-octane reggae volume under the pseudonym Dubcatcher. As with previous albums, the tracks each feature a different guest vocalist which, combined with the barely-a-pause-for-breath pace, gives this series the feel of a live singjay contest. Dreadzone's Earl Sixteen is the biggest name on Flames Up! and his track, ‘Manipulation’, is respectfully low on turntable showboating, allowing him to flex his muscles. Deep hand-drum echoes supplement his rootsy voice perfectly. Elsewhere, Vadim leans more towards dancehall and jungle influences to allow his own skills at the decks to shine through.

Vadim's knack for discovering fresh talent gives the project a strong contemporary edge. But in comparison to his previous Dubcatcher volumes, the quality of Dubcatcher 3 falls a little short. There are a lot of competing big personalities here, and it sounds overcrowded because of the shift towards dancehall styles. ‘Free Ya Mind’ is a welcome respite, with the soulful musings of Chyna Soulstar simmering down the gravelly vocals of Red Fox. DJ Vadim has done better, although Dubcatcher followers will be pleased to hear another album in a similar vein.
