Far Flung Corners

December/2017

A mix of Dorset and West Highland influences characterise Far Flung Corners and a beautiful and engaging collaboration it is too. Founded by Dorset-based Dan Somogyi (piano and guitar) along with Uist-based fiddler Anna-Wendy Stevenson, Far Flung Collective are a refreshing alliance who perfectly blend the songs of South-West England with the Outer Hebrides. The Dorset-inspired ‘Linden Lea’, for example, nestles comfortably alongside Stevenson's ‘Udal Waulking Song’. The collective are further bolstered by Alex Roberts on vocals, guitar and bouzouki, Simon Bradley on viola, Joseph Peach on accordion, Mabel Duncan on violins, Tom Campbell on flute and bodhrán and Jordan Neil on guitar and pipes.
Spoken-word opener ‘I’ll Carry Your Song' perfectly captures the essence of the collaboration with the line ‘I arrived as a stranger, hope to leave as a friend.’ It's a truly beautiful piece of work, a melding of self-penned tunes and traditional themes, all bound with the optimism of friendship and co-operation. Concluding with the gently reflective ‘Road to Eriskay’, this is a real treat – a beguiling, gorgeous and delightful release.
