Madagascar's status as a biodiversity hotspot under threat is well known, so this compilation – the proceeds of which will be split 50/50 between the artists and the charity Treemad, which is working on reforestation of the island – is something worth supporting. Even if the rather disappointing album might make you wonder whether a simple donation might be a better option; Madagascar is home to a very diverse and unique music culture, which could have been better represented.

Most of Feedback Madagascar consists of relentless break-neck pop rhythms, albeit ones that sometimes exhibit the influence of hip-hop and neighbouring South Africa. It could have highlighted some of the traditional Malagasy instruments, such as the members of the valiha(zither) and marovany (lute) families, or the sodina (flute). We do hear a little kabosy, and some mangaliba mandolins; another plus is that many of the artists showcased haven’t had much international exposure before.
