Westward the Light mark their fifth year as a trad quartet with Flow Country, their second album release. It's an accomplished, tight recording with a fine selection of classic Scottish tune sets making the most of the musicians’ rich talents.
For only four musicians, the band create an impressive, almost orchestral sound. Rich harmonies and string melodies populate the album, with a choice assortment of jigs and reels prominent. Equally impressive, Flow Country was recorded live in one room ensuring a powerfully intimate sound.
‘The Dornoch Links’ is a fine version of the march, whilst ‘The Braes of Rannoch’ is an evocative slow air. ‘Neil Gow's Style’ is a particular highlight, with some fiery fiddle work in honour of the master. Single release, the Sally Simpson-penned ‘Good Days’ is a bright, fresh tune with a brisk finish, whilst Joseph Peach's title track sees the quartet in a poignant mood.
Throughout the nine tracks, the quartet demonstrate their fine ears for good Scottish tunes alongside some taut and skilful musicianship. Their keen love for the Scottish tradition is palpable. The classic fiddle and piano sounds resonate throughout and ensure that Westward The Light deliver something rather glorious and heart-warmingly traditional.
