Beth Malcolm’s follow-up to her 2023 debut album, Kissed and Cried, presents a delightful musical triptych that takes the listener on an intimate journey of discovery and belonging. Named BBC MG ALBA Scots Singer of the Year in 2022, the Perth-born, Glasgow-based artist demonstrates her versatility through an innovative blend of song and spoken word that highlights her talents as a vocalist, pianist and songwriter. Excerpted from the Child Ballads, she delivers a haunting reimagining of the traditional murder ballad ‘Edward’. The heartbreakingly beautiful ‘Meet Me by the Goretree’ deftly marries an exquisite reel by legendary fiddle player Tommy Peoples with an adaptation of Violet Jacob’s elegiac war poem, ‘Glory’. Malcolm’s self-penned ‘Little Lows’ shines equally brightly, while the gorgeous ‘The Mountain (Glen Artney)’ builds to a transcendent climax. Supported by an exceptional ensemble featuring some of Scotland’s finest folk and jazz musicians, the album is expertly produced and engineered by Dorian Cloudsley and Gus Stirrat respectively.
