Nana Vortex are a young Hungarian band playing original songs, but with strong folk influences. The seven-piece line-up includes two female vocalists, Dorottya Jéger and Julianna Paár, plus saxophone, accordion, cimbalom, double bass and drum kit. The music is acoustic and many of the melodies have the contour of folk songs – ‘Huszáros’ being a good example, featuring a convincing rap by accordion player Szabolcs Bíró – but the drumming in particular takes it into a different world.
The musicianship and arrangements are good and there are some very catchy tunes here – ‘Egy Régi Hang’ and ‘Kopott Ember’, for example – but I don't hear anything particularly innovative in Nana Vortex.
