This isn't your average Afrobeat album; this one explores not only messages of black power and equality, but also the ways in which kung fu intersects with Afrobeat. Juicy Hammond organ sounds, long-form Afrobeat arrangements, blistering horn-lines, powerful vocals from kung fu master Duke Amayo and funky guitar licks – all this and more can be found on this monster of an album from Antibalas on their 20th anniversary.
Opener ‘Amenawon’, named in honour of Duke Amayo's mother, begins with shaker, bell and funky Hammond organ, which are quickly joined by Amayo's airy, floating vocal and the warm horns that have become the staple of Antibalas' transcendent melodic developments. Each of the five tracks, which range from six to ten minutes in length, boast contrasting vibes and messages. ‘Lai Lai’ (meaning both ‘Never’ and ‘Forever’ in Yoruba) is a homage to the sustainable practices of various indigenous African groups. ‘Fight Am Finish’ invites the spirits of Seshat (ancient Egyptian goddess of wisdom) and Ogun (Yoruba god of industry and war) and aims to offer encouragement to the listener through life's daily battles. ‘Koto’ is the story of two lovers on the run from the underworld -gripping stuff. There is much to take from this album – danceable party vibes collide with meaningful lyrics, all from the surprising home of Williamsburg, NYC!
