From the birthplace of salsa choke (pronounced ‘cho-que’), a mixture of urban music styles with salsa, MA Studio is one of the fresh new artists out of Tumaco promoting salsa choke among many other urban genres from the region. Recently, there has been a wave of new musical endeavours in Tumaco, showing another face of this misunderstood region. Futuro Niche is the band’s first album and is the perfect introduction to the urban music scene on the Afro-Colombian Pacific Coast, amalgamating influences from dancehall, salsa choke, reggaeton, dembow and more.

‘El Cachón’, the opening track of the album and one of the group’s most recent singles, immediately pulls us into this quintessential sound from the Pacific underground. From the get go, the African urban music influence is undeniable, particularly in the vocals. ‘Morochaje (de Primera Línea)’ is one of the standout tracks on this album. Released as their first single, the unforgettable melody and infectious beat of ‘Morochaje’ has become MA Studio’s most iconic release. It is the last two songs on the album, ‘Ella Quiere Playa’ and ‘Mi Vecina’, that show us a somewhat softer variation of the band’s sound. ‘Mi Vecina’, in particular, displays the band’s talent for mixing memorable melodies with dance-focused and rhythmically interesting back-beats and vocals.
