Native Gaelic speaker Màiri MacMillan transforms three decades of Glasgow life into a stunning musical tribute with her new album Glaschu – Songs to a City. Originally from South Uist, MacMillan crafts nine original songs in Gaelic that celebrate her adopted home while honouring its role in preserving and revitalising her ancestral language. The album opens with the tender ‘Glaschu (Glasgow)’, a paean to the city’s warmth and hospitality, while the hypnotic call-and-response of ‘Gaol am Pairc na Bànrighinn (Love in Queen’s Park)’ is a captivating highpoint. The exquisite ‘Seud Luachmhòr (Precious Jewel)’ presents a reflection on Gaelic’s cultural significance delivered with the emotional depth that can only come from a lifetime immersed in the language. The elegant, minimalist accompaniment is provided by Germa Adan (guitar, fiddle, piano), who also arranges and produces the album, Matt Carmichael (sax, piano) and Rory Matheson (piano). A singular and memorable collection that deserves the widest possible audience.
