Newcastle-born Stewart Garry may be a relatively new name to some, but with his latest release, Hearth, he makes his presence very pleasingly felt with an album that impeccably displays the fine talents of the burgeoning fingerstyle guitarist. There are teases of laid-back folk, cool funk and even a little jazz here; especially so on ‘Stuck in a Memory’, which captures a contemporary, chilled lounge vibe. ‘A Lullaby for Benji’, on the other hand, takes us down a more mellow road, with a sweet little melody.

At its heart Garry’s album is, as the title suggests, about the comforts of home – especially important considering its conception as a lockdown project – and a warm, homely vibe permeates throughout. While Hearth highlights Garry’s musicianship as a solo fingerstyle guitarist, and flair as a writer, he also engages a few guests for two tracks. His brother James on whistle and Joanna Karselis on violin join on ‘Beinn Uaignidh’ – a beautifully evocative slice of a highland lament, while John Griffiths’ drums accompany on ‘Autumn Walks’. Garry’s style may be a little too relaxed for some ears, but Hearth is a beautifully tender and effortlessly enjoyable listen – intimately and sensitively recorded.
