This second album from esteemed fiddle player Bryony Griffith brings together an outstanding collection of both known and less-common English folk tunes, a number of which are drawn from her native Yorkshire and surrounding counties. Griffith's 25 years of experience in English folk means she performs with impressive technical skill as well as an elegant expressivity that fiddle players often lack.
The album opens with two traditional jigs, ‘Ladies’ Pleasure & Constant Billy’, both of which have been played for morris dancing team Dog Rose Morris. From the outset, Griffith's talent for playing for dancers is clear, as her commanding style lifts the tunes, providing perfect accompaniment. The urge to stand and turn a reel is amplified by the addition of Ian Stephenson's guitar and double bass on the second track, ‘The Recovery & the Red House’.
These are tunes that deserve to be brought back to life, and Griffith has done a stellar job. An essential addition for both seasoned folk fans and those dabbling for the first time.
