If Ásgeir Ásgeirsson does something, you simply have to take notice. This renowned Icelandic musician has a thirst for new discoveries and musical journeys; over the last few years it has all led to a trilogy of albums of which Persian Path is the latest. In 2009 he was invited to Bulgaria where he spent some time learning Bulgarian folk music, an experience he describes as ‘life changing’. A hugely respected rock, pop and jazz guitarist, he was now adding bouzouki, oud, saz and tambura to his palette. Volume 1 brought Icelandic folk songs and Turkish musicians together, Volume 2 focused on Bulgaria and, for Persian Path, Ásgeirsson travels to Iran.

The Icelandic folk songs and ancient hymns are sung by well known vocalist Sigriður Thorlacius, whose haunting voice embraces Eastern rhythms and scales, and the exquisite textures and ornamentations of Ásgeirsson's arrangements and newly-written melodies. She retains the serenity of the hymns as well as invoking the passion of traditional Persian music. ‘Ó Herra Guð’ (Lord God of Peace) is a fine example of a meeting of traditions on this beautifully crafted album.
