Originally released in 2023, this is a new deluxe version to take advantage of the attention it has garnered since its first release. Mateus ‘doing’ rock, is a project born in the favelas of Fortaleza where young people of colour play punk- and grunge-inflected rock with heavy MPB influences. Mateus himself has talked about growing up and listening to Nirvana and Silverchair but not being able to identify with the white-dominated scene, and from this disenfranchisement, his own sound developed. And what a sound it is, a mixture of rock dynamism and Brazilian melody to sing tales of favela lifestyles and culture. The title track is a dramatic mixture of rap, rock and vivid poetry, while ‘Pode Ser Easy’ has a positive vision where the melody shows clear traces of Brazilian soul. ‘Pose de Malandro/Me Querem Morto’ examines the archetypes that society imposes on Black males over funk beats. Mateus is obviously a huge musical talent but is also a voice with much to say.
