Here’s an easy-going fusion set, in which a Swedish jazz flautist teams up with a Malian ngoni player for a gently charming collaboration of sturdy African riffs and drifting flute work that is at its best when other musicians join in. Annarella met Django, who is a cousin of the late Toumani Diabaté, when they were touring with the Afro-European project Wau Wau Collectif, and began jamming on the tour bus and in hotels. They recorded the album in Sweden and Senegal (Django is based in Dakar) with friends joining in. Django’s wife Marietou Kouyaté provides fine, cool vocals on ‘Sarajalela’ and ‘Megaphone’, while the Swedish folk musician Ale Möller adds trumpet on ‘Dakar-Örebro’ and jaw harp and melodica on the moody and atmospheric ‘Pluie Melancholique’. Fine for late night background listening.
