Faith Mussa comes from a strong musical background. Growing up in Blantyre, Malawi, he started performing with The Mussa Family Band from a young age, on a variety of instruments. This proficiency and dynamism has seen him become renowned as both a solo musician – he often performs as a one-man band – and a talented collaborator, with artists such as the Martinez Brothers and Rudimental. His latest project, Kalilima, features Afriquoi's Papa Ngoni Fiston, Nico Bentley and producer Chris Pedley.
Kalilima is a joyous listen. From its opener, the record offers a playful blend of pop, soul and electronics. ‘Chimwana Changa’ cleverly builds looped vocal patterns before opening out into a stomping groove, while ‘Ngoma’, ‘Pamudzi Pano’ and ‘Ali Dere’ all showcase Mussa's undeniable knack for catchy hooks and memorable guitar lines.
Mussa is also skilled at switching up the pace. ‘Kwanu Nkwanu’ opens with splashes of dancehall before a high-tempo shangaan-styled rhythm takes hold. And while the tempo pushes upwards of 200bpm, he is able to deftly draw out a melody over the top. This unapologetic melding of styles may not be for everyone, but Faith Mussa's talent lies in creating sounds anew, offering a refreshing and unique take on dance styles from across Africa and the Caribbean diaspora.
